Okay, to answer the inevitable question.
We’re moving to Nelson for a year while I, Scott, take the Fine Woodworking Program at Selkirk College. I applied two years ago (due to the notoriously long waiting list) because I wanted the opportunity to build with my hands and learn to work the amazing medium of wood. The program has a good reputation for teaching the basics of quality craftsmanship, especially the use of hand tools and joinery techniques. Not to mention that the program is really cheap compared to some woodworking schools and it’s a good excuse to live in BC for a year.
The course is centered around joints and joinery - Josie laughs when I tell her this - basically how to join pieces of wood so that they stay together for a very long time (no nails or screws allowed). Most of the time is spent in the workshop designing and building your own projects. The projects focus on furniture construction, cabinetry and finish carpentry.
I’ll see how it goes!
